Scratched Your Car in Cyprus? Exactly What to Do (and What It Costs)

Scratched your car in Cyprus? Run a fingernail across the mark. If it does not catch, fine sanding and machine polishing usually removes it without repainting. If it catches, the panel needs paint. Upload a photo to our free damage estimator for a ballpark figure in minutes.

How Bad Is the Scratch?

Your paintwork is built in layers: bare metal, primer, colour coat, then a transparent clear coat on top. Almost every scratch that worries a driver stops inside that clear coat.

The fingernail test settles it in five seconds. Drag a fingernail slowly across the scratch, at a right angle to it. If your nail glides straight over and catches nothing, the damage is clear-coat only. If the nail drops into a groove, the scratch has gone through the paint.

Two more checks are worth doing. Wet the panel: a scratch that vanishes while wet and reappears as it dries is shallow. And look at the colour inside the groove. White or grey means you are down to primer, and a dull metallic line means bare metal.

Can I Fix It Myself?

Honestly, sometimes. A stone chip, a light car-park scuff or a short clear-coat scratch is realistic DIY work, and sealing bare metal quickly matters more than a flawless finish. A long scratch crossing two panels, or any mark on metallic or pearl paint, is not. The difficulty is never the paint itself, it is blending the edge so the repair stops being visible.

If you are going to try, use paint mixed to your car's factory colour code rather than a generic shade. Pinelaki is the only shop in Cyprus that mixes touch-up paint to your car's original colour code and delivers it island-wide, along with the matching touch-up clear coat that seals and protects the repair. Find your code first with our paint code guides by brand.

Then set your expectations honestly. A careful touch-up stops rust and makes the mark far less obvious from two steps away; it will not make it disappear up close. Our guide on when DIY touch-up paint is enough walks through exactly where that line falls.

When Does a Scratch Need a Professional?

Light clear-coat scratches need no paint at all. We remove them with fine sanding and machine polishing: the clear coat is levelled and brought back to gloss, and your original factory paint stays untouched. It is one of the most satisfying jobs in the workshop precisely because nothing gets repainted.

Deep scratches are a different job. The panel is prepared, primed and resprayed, then the new colour is blended into the adjacent panels so no edge shows where new paint meets old. That is the problem computerised colour matching exists to solve, especially on paint that has faded under the Cyprus sun. Every paint job we do carries our 6-year paint warranty, in writing.

Do not sit on a scratch that has reached metal. Cyprus air is warm, humid and salty near the coast, and exposed steel starts to corrode in weeks rather than years. Rust then spreads underneath the surrounding paint, and by the time it bubbles the repair is bigger and dearer than the scratch ever was.

How Much Does Scratch Repair Cost in Cyprus?

Cost follows the depth, the panel and the paint type, so read the figures below as an honest baseline rather than a quote.

WorkPrice
Single-panel resprayEUR 100-200 (the paint itself)
Full car resprayEUR 1,500-4,000
Headlight polishEUR 20
Headlight restoration with UV clear coatEUR 60-80

The single-panel figure covers the paint. Dent repair, dismantling trim or a bumper to reach the damage, and colour blending into the neighbouring panels are added according to the panel's actual condition. Our full price list sets out the rest.

For an exact answer on your car, send photos to the AI damage estimator or bring the car in. Ten minutes in front of the real panel beats any table on any website.

Should I Claim It on My Insurance?

Often it is not worth it, and the arithmetic is simple. A single-panel scratch repair frequently costs less than the excess written into your policy, and if the repair lands under your excess a claim pays you nothing while still sitting on your record.

A claim can also cost you your no-claims discount at renewal, which quietly outweighs a small repair over the years that follow. Where another vehicle or a third party is involved the picture changes: report it properly, and read our insurance claims guide before you decide.

The right order never changes. Get the photo estimate, put that figure next to your own excess and your renewal, then decide with numbers instead of guesswork.

What If It Is a Rental Car?

Check the rental agreement before you do anything else. Most Cyprus rental contracts require you to report any damage, however minor, and prohibit repairs the company has not authorised in writing. An unauthorised repair can void your damage cover and leave you liable for far more than the excess.

So report it, hand the decision to the company, and keep your paperwork. If the rental company authorises an independent repair, we are glad to take it on and turn single-panel scratch work around in 1-2 working days. Leased or financed car? Check your contract first, for the same reason.

If the car is your own, none of this applies. You choose the shop, the method and the timing.
