Returning a Leased or Company Car in Cyprus? Fix Scratches
August 5, 2026

Yes, repairing scratches before you hand back a leased or company car is normal, expected and usually cheaper than the end-of-contract damage charge. Read your lease for approved-repairer and repair-standard clauses first, then send photos through our free AI damage estimator for a figure in about a minute.
Pinelaki has been painting cars in Nicosia since 1991, and lease returns and company-fleet handovers are among the steadiest jobs on our bench. Here is how to approach one without paying twice.
What counts as fair wear and tear at lease end?
Fair wear and tear is what a careful driver accumulates through normal use. Damage is what one careless moment leaves behind. Most agreements draw the line at the paint surface: marks that polish out of the clear coat are usually accepted, while anything that has cut through the paint to primer or bare metal gets written up as damage.
Your contract's damage schedule and the inspector's checklist are the only versions that count. Read them before you book anything, because standards differ between leasing companies, and between a private lease and a corporate fleet policy.
Cyprus adds its own factor. After 35+ years of resprays here we can tell at a glance which cars sat outside all summer: flat, chalky clear coat on the roof and bonnet, courtesy of roughly 3,300 hours of sunshine a year. Uniform fading is normally treated as wear. A single dull or off-shade panel beside healthy ones is what draws the inspector's pen.
Which scratches and dents get charged back to you?
From what we see on returned fleet cars, the same items come back again and again:
- Scratches deep enough to catch a fingernail, where the paint layer is broken
- Kerbed, scuffed or cracked bumper corners, easily the most common item of all
- Dents with cracked or lifted paint, or any dent sitting on a swage line
- Earlier repairs done badly: visible overspray, off-shade panels, orange-peel texture
- Cloudy, yellowed headlights, which fail on both appearance and night visibility
Light clear-coat marks can often be sanded and machine polished with no repaint at all, which is the cheapest outcome available to you. Our car scratch repair page explains where that line sits, and the bumper repair cost guide covers the corner scuffs that dominate handover charges.
Is repairing before handover cheaper than the leasing company's charge?
Usually yes, for a simple reason: the leasing company recharges damage at its own end-of-contract rates, item by item, often with an administration fee on top. A body shop prices the same panel once, as a repair.
Two things to check before you book. First, whether your lease names an approved repairer or an approved network. Second, whether it sets a repair standard, such as work carried out to professional or manufacturer standard with documentation. If either clause is there, follow it or get written permission from the lessor.
We supply an itemised invoice naming the panels, the process and the paint system used, together with our 6-year paint warranty paperwork, which is exactly what a professional-standard clause is asking for. Never try to hide earlier damage or an earlier repair. Inspectors find it, and an undeclared repair is treated far more harshly than the honest one you can document.
I scratched a company car, what do I tell my employer?
Tell them, in writing, as soon as you notice it. Most fleet policies set a reporting window and name who authorises repairs, and quietly arranging your own work outside that process is the version that gets people into trouble.
Ask two questions in the same message: who pays, and who approves the repairer. Attach a photo estimate so the conversation starts with a number instead of an unknown. If you are working in Cyprus on a foreign contract and would rather handle all of it in English, our expat car repair page explains how we work with drivers and employers who are new here.
How far ahead of the inspection should I book the repair?
Aim for two to three weeks before the return date. Not because the work takes that long, but because the sequence around it does: written approval from your employer or lessor, a colour check on a sun-faded panel, and fresh paint that should be fully hardened and settled by inspection day.
Booking late is where the money goes. A car dropped off two days before handover leaves no room for a second colour pass, or for a part that has to come in. If your schedule only opens up outside office hours, our after-hours body repair page covers how we stay reachable seven days a week, from 8am to 11pm.
What does pre-handover repair cost, and how fast can it be done?
A single-panel respray runs EUR 100 to 200 for the paint itself, with dent repair, dismantling and colour blending added according to the panel's condition. Headlight restoration is EUR 20 for a polish, or EUR 60 to 80 with a fresh UV clearcoat that lasts. A full respray, at EUR 1,500 to 4,000, is almost never the right answer before a handover.
Most single-panel work sits in the workshop for two to three working days. For the exact figure on your car, the pricing page holds our baseline rates, and the photo estimator returns a tailored range from three or four pictures in about a minute, free.
Can you collect and return the car around my working hours?
Yes. Pickup and delivery is free island-wide for repairs, so a leased car can be collected from your office in Nicosia, Limassol or Larnaca and returned finished, without you losing a working day. See pickup and delivery for how it is arranged.
Our workshop is at Mesokeleos 15 in Pallouriotissa, two minutes from Kaimakli, and the 70+ five-star reviews behind us come largely from people who needed a car back by a fixed date. Bring us the inspection date and we will work backwards from it.
Send us photos of the damage and a copy of the relevant clause from your lease, and we will tell you plainly whether the repair is worth doing before handover.
