How Do You Know if a Scratch Will Polish Out?

Car paint is built in layers: primer, colour, and on top a transparent clear coat roughly 40-60 microns thick — thinner than a human hair. Most scratches that look alarming in the Cyprus sun live entirely in that top transparent layer.

Drag a fingernail slowly across the scratch at a right angle. If it passes over without snagging, the damage has not gone through the clear coat and polishing is on the table. If it catches — even slightly — the scratch has cut into the colour coat or deeper, and no amount of polishing will close it.

Two more quick checks: a white or grey line inside the scratch usually means exposed primer, and a bright silver line means bare metal. Both need paint — and bare metal should not wait, because in Cyprus heat and humidity corrosion starts quickly.
