Light passes through it, bounces off the base, and comes back with that deep, shifting glow you see on pearl whites and premium reds. Because the pearl layer is translucent, the colour you see is the base and the pearl working together - neither one alone matches the car.

Why Does Pearl Paint Need Two Bottles?

The base coat and the pearl mid-coat are two different mixes that do two different jobs. The base lays down the ground colour; the pearl mid-coat is sprayed over it in controlled passes to build the exact amount of sparkle and depth. Use the base alone and the spot looks dull next to the rest of the panel. Use the wrong amount of pearl and it looks too light or too 'frosted'.
