Do not clean or buff it yet. The scratch as-found is your evidence, and wiping grit along it only drives the damage deeper.

Photograph before you move the car - wide shots of the parking spot, then close shots of each scratch in daylight at a slight angle so the depth reads.
Look for cameras the same day. Shop fronts, apartment entrances and parking barriers usually record, and footage is often overwritten within days.
Note the time window - when you parked, when you found it. Police and insurers both ask.
Ask neighbours or the shop owner what they saw, but do not confront anyone you suspect.
Check every panel. Keyed cars are rarely hit once, and the far side gets missed.

Do I Need to Report a Keyed Car to the Police in Cyprus?

If you plan to claim, yes. Deliberate damage to property is a criminal offence in Cyprus, and insurers handling malicious damage normally ask for a police report or reference number before they process anything.

Call 112 if the person is still nearby or you feel unsafe. Otherwise report at your nearest station with your ID, the vehicle registration document and your photos, and ask for the report number in writing.

File it even if you end up paying for the repair yourself. Where a street sees repeated vandalism, the paper trail is what makes the police act.

Does Insurance Cover Deliberate Damage, or Will I Lose My No-Claims Discount?

Comprehensive policies in Cyprus generally do cover malicious damage, subject to your policy excess. A third-party-only policy does not cover damage to your own car at all.

The no-claims answer varies by insurer and by whether your policy carries no-claims protection. Phone them, describe the damage, and ask two things: what your excess is on this claim, and whether it affects your discount.

On one keyed panel the arithmetic often kills the claim - the repair can cost less than the excess plus the discount you would forfeit. Decide with real numbers in front of you, and report the incident accurately either way. How Deep Is a Key Scratch, and Can It Be Polished Out?

Run a fingernail across it. If the nail does not catch and the line looks dull white rather than a different colour, the damage stopped in the clear coat.

There is not much material to work with: a factory paint system is roughly 100-140 microns thick in total, about the width of a human hair, and the clear coat is only some 40-50 microns of that.

Clear-coat scratches come out with fine sanding and machine polishing, no repaint. Once grey primer or bare metal shows, polishing cannot reach it - the panel needs filling, priming, repainting and blending into its neighbours so the colour match is invisible. What Does Keyed-Car Repair Cost in Cyprus?

It comes down to how many panels the key crossed and how deep it went.

A single-panel respray is EUR 100-200 for the paint. If the key also creased the metal, or the door has to be dismantled so the edges are painted properly, dent repair, dismantling and colour blending are added to that.

A key dragged along a whole flank crosses four or five panels, and at that scale a full respray at EUR 1,500-4,000 usually gives both the better finish and the better value. Will a Keyed Scratch Rust If You Leave It?

If bare steel is showing, yes - sooner than most drivers expect.

Cyprus is hard on paint: about 3,300 hours of sunshine a year, salt-laden air along the coast, and heavy overnight dew inland through winter. Exposed steel can carry surface rust within a few weeks of that.

The real cost of waiting is scope creep. Once corrosion travels sideways under the paint edge, a paint-only repair turns into metal preparation, and one panel turns into two. If the scratch is down to metal, seal it before the wet season, not after.
