When Is DIY Scratch Repair the Right Call?

Run a fingernail across the mark. If your nail glides over it, the scratch sits only in the clear coat. Marks like that can often be removed with fine sanding and machine polishing alone, no paint needed. If the nail catches but you still see colour underneath, a touch-up is realistic.

DIY makes sense for stone chips, thin scratches and marks on low-visibility panels: sills, lower door edges, bumper corners. It is the wrong call when you see grey primer or bare metal, when the panel is dented or creased, or when the damage sits on the bonnet or roof. With around 3,300 hours of sunshine a year, Cyprus light exposes even a slight colour mismatch. Metallic and pearl finishes are also hard to blend by hand.

How Do You Apply Touch-Up Paint Properly?

1. Wash and degrease. Paint applied over dust or wax will peel. Use car shampoo, then a silicone remover or isopropyl alcohol on the scratch itself.
2. Find your factory paint code. "Red" is not a colour code. Toyota's Magnetic Gray is 1G3, Mazda's Soul Red Crystal is 46V, and each needs its own formula. Our paint code guides by brand show exactly where the plate sits on your model, like this Mazda Axela example.
3. Prep the scratch. Lightly sand any rust spot back to clean metal and re-clean. Never trap rust under fresh paint.
4. Apply thin layers. Two or three thin coats beat one thick blob every time. Let each layer flash for 10-15 minutes before the next.
5. Seal with clear coat. Base colour without clear coat stays dull and unprotected. A touch-up clear coat, or a 1K or 2K spray, adds the gloss and the UV protection.
6. Let it cure. The repair is touch-dry within the hour, but keep the car away from washing, waxing and polishing for about a week.
